HBO’s Next Big Thing?
Herring Bone Introduces You to Joy Suprano BEFORE She Debuts on the Cable Giant’s Hit Show How To Make It In America
Posted by Steve Herring on October 28, 2011
We’ve got your first look at one of Hollywood’s rising young stars.
I got to spend some time on the phone and e-mailing this week with the amazingly talented and gracious Joy Suprano. You’re going to want to know more about her sooner than later, so get a head start right here!
Joy, whose name validates her outgoing, sunny nature, is making her début on HBO’s hit show How to Make It in America this Sunday. Fans of the NYC dramedy are in for a treat when the vivacious blonde crashes onto millions of TV screens this weekend. She claims in our interview (coming Sunday) that the Jersey Shore’s Deena would describe her character on the show as “a blast in a glass”. If that’s the case – we all better gear up for a fantastic ride on the rest of Season Two.
As if if her first appearance on HBO wasn’t enough, Joy’s feature film We Are the Hartmans debuts on November 2nd - quite a week at the Suprano household. The movie’s Wednesday première follows her first motion picture appearance alongside Jenna Fischer (The Office) and Chris O’Donnell (Scent of a Woman, Batman & Robin) in the 2010 comedy A Little Help.
Joy has also dropped in on three different sets of Law & Order (SVU, Criminal Intent, and the original) between 2009-2011. Busy girl.
Joy’s career is trending upwards at a fervent pace and I’m grateful she gave me a slice of her schedule to introduce this budding star properly. Learn more in a bio below and then this site’s exclusive interview - it will be posting prior to Sunday’s showing of How to Make It in America.
Editor’s Note: I worked with Joy in 2009 at a New York City nightclub while we both cranked through the grind that is serving obscene quantities of alcohol to the masses in Manhattan. We hadn’t spoken in almost two years and I was beyond ecstatic that she made herself so available to me this week after I reached out. Obviously she’s fast approaching a chaotic calendar and I’m proud to be a part of the hype machine revving up her career.
She is among the most generous, happy, and “Joy-us” people one could possibly encounter (not a plug, just the truth). I can only hope that it shows through in her upcoming projects, as I’ll be tuning in this Sunday to experience a friendly blast from the past.
Below you will find a Herring Bone profile of Joy, and this weekend you’ll get the interview (Don’t worry sports fans - Joy’s got that side of my quota filled!).
Without further ad0 …Meet the subject of Herring Bone’s first celebrity interview!
Name: Joy Suprano
- Find Her: Facebook, @joysuprano, Wikipedia
- Hometown: Lower Burrell, PA (Pittsburgh Suburb)
- You Might Know her From: A Little Help, Law & Order
She’s About to BLOW UP In: How to Make it in America (watch Sunday!), We Are the Hartmans, and she recently finished production on the HBO pilot “40″ - starring Ed Burns and created by Doug Ellin of Entourage.
Favorite Sports Memory: When you are born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA it means sports aren’t an “option”, but rather a way of life. In fact, when I was born I’m pretty sure the doctor didn’t wrap me in blanket - I think I was swaddled in a Terrible Towel.
I am one of three girls, but that didn’t stop my dad from making sure he got his “sports fix”. He taught all three of us how to
play every sport imaginable. I can still remember seeing my dad in the bleachers of every basketball practice in high school. Steelers and sports with my father is what makes me feel at home in the sports world.
Favorite Athlete: I am obviously true to my Steelers. I love Troy Polamalu - he is a beast on the field and a true leader. I also find it remarkable that he is known for being such a soft-spoken person. I deeply admire his commitment to faith, family and his team.
My second favorite athlete would be my sister, Jenine. I’m the youngest of three girls and it could get pretty competitive in my house. I went to every sporting event she had and I wanted to be just like her. She broke all kinds of school records in every sport she played. She was little (5’3″), but was always the BEST player. She was just so quick and tough - I learned so much about life from watching her compete. She even played football for the Pittsburgh Passions – a member of the National Women’s Football Association. She is just natural and I love her!
Favorite Movie: That’s a tough one. If I say The Godfather people would think it’s cliché, but if I say, “I don’t know… Sleepless in Seattle“, people would think I’m into just chick flicks…. (Sigh) I just love movies! Romantic comedies, action, sports, drama, and documentaries. In the last two weeks I’ve seen Footloose and Moneyball if you want an idea of where my interests lie – which is everywhere.
Actor/Actress She’d Kill to Work With: Short list: Ryan Gosling, Steve Carrell, Tom Hanks, Marisa Tomei and Matt Damon.
My top pick: There is a reason Julia Roberts is where she is, and it’s not just because she’s “America’s sweetheart”. That may true, but there is also truth in the fact that she is just extremely good. We all love Pretty Woman because of her honesty. She has a unique gift when it comes to making the audience ”feel” it and can makes acting look so easy. I would kill to work with her and hopefully pick up some of her awesomeness.
Also, as far as actor/producer I’d like to work with Mark Wahlberg. It seems as if everything he touches turns to gold. When you look at his film and television projects it’s obvious he knows how to pick good material and put together an amazing team. It would be a dream to be a part of something like that.
Totally Random: Some things people may not know about me:
- I’m actually a classically trained actress. I graduated from The Julliard School in New York City (home to some of our industries finest i.e. Kevin Spacey, Robin Williams, Laura Linney, etc.)
- I am a master party planner, I love junk food and I’m in a book club. (I have only finished two of the books..don’t tell!)
HerringBoneSports.com has an exclusive interview with Joy that we’ll be distributing for your pleasure before Sunday’s episode on HBO. (Watch!)
Here’s a little preview:
Herring Bone (Steve): When I previewed Saturday Night Live’s 37th season I compared Kristen Wiig to Ben Roethlisberger because they’re both powerhouse stars on super successful teams, yet leave the fan base divided. Your thoughts on Two-Time Super Bowl Champion and YOUR Quarterback “Big Ben”?
Joy: “I assumed you would bring up Big Ben…
On game day I have mixed feelings on him. He’s like a new mexican restaurant in that you can take a chance and maybe have the best meal of your life OR you spend the next 24 hours in the bathroom filled with regret.
I appreciate that he is a risk taker – big risks big rewards – but sometimes I close my eyes when he throws the ball and pray it ends up in the hands of someone on our team.”
